A people preserved! (Luke 1:5-17)

Hola friends! Let’s put off our Monday blues by tuning into GOD’s WORD.

Take time to pray and ask GOD to teach you, for trying to understand HIS WORD on our own would be foolishness!

Luke has really gone into all the details, hasn’t he? His gospel covers details which other gospels don’t . Notice how Luke indicates the timelines for his friend, he mentions the ruler of that time, Herod, the king of Judea. Herod was appointed by the Romans and was a descendant of Esau, the brother of Jacob (so technically he was not an Israelite). He was known to be cunning and cruel. But, Luke focuses on someone else here, a couple named Zacharias and Elizabeth. They were both from the priestly line, blameless in the sight of GOD. Wait! Does that mean they never sinned? No, they were justified by their faith in GOD just as Abraham was. Everything looked perfect for them except that they did not have a child. This was regarded as a divine disfavour by the people of that time. But still GOD’s grace was sufficient for them, GOD still gave them grace to continue to serve HIM even in the midst of pain as we see in v.8,9,10. Unexpectedly, good news is delivered to Zacharias, he is still in shock and finds it hard to believe. News, that his wife will soon bear him a son and he is to be named “John”, which means “favoured by Jehovah”. And the angel goes on to say that he will be filled with joy and gladness! What for? Personal win? To show everyone that GOD was favourable towards him? No, because GOD will fill this child with HIS spirit and this child will prepare the hearts of many to meet their Saviour. So, this was not just good news to Zacharias but also to the people praying outside!

While the world focused on Herod and his massive projects, GOD focused on HIS people!

GOD preserved for HIM a people to be prepared for HIM”

Self reflection:

1. How has GOD’s grace been sufficient for you in times of pain?

2. Has HIS good news filled you with joy and gladness?
